What car key replacement involves

Here is how One & Only Locksmith approaches car key replacement.

Car key replacement covers the whole range of keys a vehicle can use: plain metal keys, transponder chip keys, remote-head and flip keys, laser-cut high-security keys, and the proximity fobs used in push-to-start cars. We bring the cutting equipment and the programming tools to the vehicle, cut the blade to the vehicle's key code or to your working key, and pair the chip or fob to the immobilizer. Coverage is most makes and model years; we confirm your year, make and model on the phone before dispatching.

We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. The dispatch line at (888) 492-0666 is answered around the clock.

What's included

  • Key identification by year, make, model, trim and in some cases VIN, so the right blank or fob is on the van before we leave
  • Blade cutting to factory specification: edge-cut on a code machine, or laser (sidewinder) cutting for high-security keys
  • Transponder initialization and immobilizer pairing through the OBD port, or an onboard procedure where the manufacturer provides one
  • Remote functions paired and tested: lock, unlock, trunk, panic and, where fitted, remote start
  • Function test in the ignition or push-button start, every door, the trunk or hatch, and the glove box where it is keyed
  • A second key cut and programmed in the same visit if you want a spare while the tools are already connected

When you need car key replacement

  • Lost every car key and stranded in a parking lot
  • Down to your last working key or fob and need a backup
  • Bought a used car that came with only one key (or none)
  • Inherited or auctioned a vehicle with no keys at all
  • Key broke in half and won't turn the ignition or open the door
  • Push-to-start fob died, batteries replaced and still won't pair

What to have ready

  • Photo ID plus the registration, title or insurance card showing the vehicle and your name
  • Year, make, model and trim, and the VIN from the registration or the plate at the base of the windshield
  • How many working keys you have right now (zero changes the procedure on many makes)
  • A photo of the back of your existing fob if you have one; the FCC ID and part number tell us exactly which replacement to bring
  • Whether the car starts with a turned key or a push button
  • For a rental, lease or company car: the agreement or written authorization from the company

Time on site and limits

Typically 30-60 minutes for a key added alongside a working key, and 45-120 minutes when all keys are lost. Time goes up when the vehicle enforces a built-in security wait before accepting a new key, when the door lock has to be decoded because no key code is available, or when a European model needs an extended programming session.

  • Some late-model vehicles have dealer-locked security gateways or key systems we cannot program on-site: many 2018-and-newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram models need gateway authorization, and many 2020-and-newer Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche and Range Rover models are dealer-only. We tell you on the phone if yours is one of them
  • A dead or weak 12V battery blocks programming; the car has to hold steady voltage during the session, so we may need to charge or jump it first
  • Some makes require a minimum number of keys to complete a pairing, or erase every existing key when a new one is added; we tell you before we start so no key you own stops working unexpectedly
  • Tibbe keys (older Ford and Jaguar), some laser-cut blanks and certain high-security keyways need specific equipment; we confirm by make and year
  • Tesla key cards and phone keys are paired through the car's own menu with an existing card; if every card is gone, Tesla service is the route
  • Vehicles with aftermarket immobilizers, remote starters or alarm bypass modules may need the installer's help before a factory key will pair

Pricing for car key replacement

The price depends on the key type (a plain transponder key costs less than a proximity fob, which costs less than a high-security laser-cut European fob), on whether you have a working key or need an all-keys-lost origination, on the make and year because some systems take much longer to program, on the number of keys you want, and on the time of day and travel. We give you a written quote before any cutting or programming.

The dispatcher gives you a range on the phone, and the technician confirms a written quote before any work starts.

Payment is by Cash, Credit Card, Debit Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and you receive an itemized receipt listing what was done.

Key types

  • Plain mechanical keys for pre-immobilizer vehicles
  • Transponder chip keys: Texas Instruments 4C/4D and DST-AES (Toyota, Lexus, Subaru, some Ford), Philips/NXP ID46 and Hitag 2/3 (GM, Honda, Nissan, Chrysler), Megamos 48 (VW, Audi), plus ID47, ID49, 8A and other current chip families
  • Remote-head keys and flip keys (remote and chip in one unit)
  • Proximity and smart keys for push-to-start vehicles
  • High-security laser-cut (sidewinder) keys, including HU66, HU92, HU100, HU101, HON66, TOY48 and NSN14 keyways
  • OEM fobs and tested aftermarket fobs; we tell you which one we are quoting

Locksmith or dealer?

A dealer orders the key by VIN and usually needs the vehicle at the dealership, which can mean a tow if you have no working key. A mobile locksmith comes to the vehicle, cuts and programs on site, and usually finishes in one visit. The dealer is the right call when the make requires dealer-only programming or a security gateway the locksmith cannot access. The dispatcher tells you which applies once they have your year, make and model; we cover most makes and model years and confirm on the phone.

FAQ

Car Key Replacement: common questions

Can you make a key for my car if I have no key at all?
For most makes and model years, yes. We pull the key code from the VIN where the manufacturer allows it, or decode the door lock to get the cuts, then program the chip or fob through the diagnostic port. Ownership proof is required before we originate a key. We confirm the exact vehicle on the phone, because a handful of late-model systems are dealer-only.
Why is a car key so much more involved than a house key?
Because most car keys are small computers. Besides cutting the blade, the transponder or fob has to be initialized and written into the car's immobilizer with manufacturer-specific software. The blank itself, the programming equipment and the time are what you are paying for, not the metal.
Should I get an OEM key or an aftermarket one?
Either can be right. OEM fobs match the original exactly and are the safe choice for premium makes. Quality aftermarket fobs from established brands program reliably on many common Japanese and domestic models and cost less. We tell you which we are quoting and why; we do not fit no-name fobs that fail to pair.
Will a new key erase my old keys?
Adding a key normally leaves the others working. The exception is an all-keys-lost procedure on some makes, which wipes every stored key before the new one is written; any key found later would need to be re-added. We explain which case applies before we start.
How many keys does my car let me have?
It varies by make; most store several. If you are at the limit, an old key has to be erased before a new one goes in. Bring whatever keys you have to the appointment so we can see what the car has stored.
Can you do it where the car is, or does it need to come to you?
The service is mobile. We cut and program at your driveway, parking garage or roadside. The only requirement is that the car has a healthy 12V battery and we can reach the OBD port and the ignition.
Where do you provide service?
We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. Each city page lists the ZIP codes and nearby communities it covers; if your address is not on a city page, call and the dispatcher will tell you whether it is inside the service area.
Is there an extra charge for nights, weekends or holidays?
Ask the dispatcher whether an after-hours charge applies to your address; you'll know before anyone is sent. The line itself is answered around the clock, every day.
