What lock repair involves
Here is how One & Only Locksmith approaches lock repair.
Lock repair finds the actual reason a lock sticks, spins or will not latch and fixes that part instead of replacing the whole lock. The cause is often a cylinder gummed up with the wrong lubricant, a sheared tailpiece, a weak spring, a strike that no longer lines up, or a door that has dropped on its hinges. We replace what has failed and leave the rest of the hardware in place.
We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. The dispatch line at (888) 492-0666 is answered around the clock.
What's included
- Inspection of the cylinder, latch, bolt, strike, hinges and door alignment to pin down the failure
- Cleaning and dry lubrication of a cylinder that has gummed up from oil-based sprays or dust
- Replacement of broken springs, tailpieces, thumbturns, retainer clips and spindles
- Strike plate adjustment or relocation so the bolt throws fully without lifting the door
- Hinge screw replacement and shimming for doors that have sagged into the strike
- Re-pinning a cylinder whose pins have worn to the point the key hangs up
- Function test with the door closed and a straight answer on whether the lock is near the end of its life
When you need lock repair
- The deadbolt is hard to throw the last 1/4"
- Your knob spins freely without retracting
- Cold weather makes the lock stick
- The key turns but the bolt doesn't fully extend
- A door has dropped on its hinges over time
What to have ready
- What the lock does: key will not go in, goes in but will not turn, turns but the bolt does not move, bolt stops short, knob spins free, latch will not catch
- Whether it happens with every key or only one copy
- Whether it got worse over months or failed suddenly
- Whether anyone has sprayed oil or penetrating lubricant into the keyway
- The brand on the lock face or the key bow if you can read it
- Proof of residency, and the landlord's contact if you rent, since the owner usually approves parts replacement
Time on site and limits
Typically 20-45 minutes for a single lock. Seized cylinders that must be fully disassembled, strike relocation that needs the jamb chiseled, hinge repair, and locks whose parts have been discontinued take longer.
- Builder-grade locks often cost more to rebuild than to replace; when that is the case we quote the replacement and let you choose
- Cylinders with an elongated keyway or pins worn out of tolerance are replaced rather than repaired, because fresh pins will not fix a plug that is out of spec
- Parts for discontinued or imported locks may not be available, and the repair then becomes a replacement
- A lock on a warped door or a shifted frame keeps failing until the door is fixed; carpentry is outside lock repair
- Smart locks with a failed motor or circuit board are handled under the manufacturer's warranty or replaced; they are not rebuilt on site
- Restricted and high-security cylinders are serviced only with the authorization the manufacturer requires, and some must go back to the dealer
Pricing for lock repair
The price is driven by diagnosis time, the parts replaced, whether the cylinder has to be disassembled or re-pinned, any strike or hinge work, and the time of day. If a repair is not worth it, we quote the replacement alongside so the choice is yours.
The dispatcher gives you a range on the phone, and the technician confirms a written quote before any work starts.
Payment is by Cash, Credit Card, Debit Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and you receive an itemized receipt listing what was done.
Hardware
- Kwikset, Schlage, Weiser, Defiant, Baldwin and Emtek residential deadbolts and knobs
- Replacement tailpieces, latches and springs for common Kwikset and Schlage models
- Adjustable deadbolt latches covering 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backsets
- Mortise locks on pre-war homes, rebuilt or replaced with compatible bodies
- Privacy and passage knobs and levers on interior doors
Repair or replace?
Repair makes sense when the lock body is sound and the problem is alignment, a worn spring, a loose spindle or a sticking cylinder. Replace when the lock is worn through, parts are discontinued, the door was forced, or you want a higher grade. On sliding and patio doors the hook or latch is often replaceable without changing the handle set; on garage and gate hardware the latch and the lock are usually separate parts.
