What keyless entry / electronic locks involves

This page explains keyless entry / electronic locks: what the job includes, what to have ready, honest limits and what sets the price.

Keyless entry locks replace the key with a code, a fob or a fingerprint and run on their own batteries or on no power at all. They do not need Wi-Fi, an app or a hub, which makes them the right fit for a side gate, a garage side door, an ADU or a front door where the goal is simply to stop hiding a key. Installation is the same careful door prep as any deadbolt, followed by programming and a walk-through.

We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. The dispatch line at (888) 492-0666 is answered around the clock.

What's included

  • Help choosing between a keypad deadbolt, keypad lever, fob or RFID lock, fingerprint lock, or a mechanical pushbutton lock that needs no batteries
  • Installation with correct strike alignment, and weather-rated hardware on exterior gates and exposed doors
  • Programming user codes and a master code, deleting factory defaults, and setting scheduled codes where the model supports them
  • Setup of auto-lock, one-touch locking and low-battery warnings
  • Testing the mechanical key override and keying it to your existing keys where the keyway allows
  • Fob or fingerprint enrollment for each user
  • A walk-through of adding and removing codes so you are not calling us for a cleaner's code

When you need keyless entry / electronic locks

  • Kids who lose keys
  • Caregivers or housekeepers needing scheduled access
  • Front gates and side gates
  • Detached garages or workshops
  • Vacation rentals with rotating guests

What to have ready

  • Ownership proof; HOA approval for exterior hardware; written landlord approval for a rental
  • Which door or gate, its material and thickness, and whether it already has a deadbolt bore
  • Who needs codes and whether any should be limited to certain hours
  • Whether you want app and remote control (that is a smart lock) or a standalone keypad
  • For a wired gate keypad, whether there is power at the gate

Time on site and limits

Typically 30-60 minutes per door for a standalone keypad deadbolt or lever. Mechanical pushbutton locks, gate keypads that need wiring to an electric strike, fingerprint enrollment for several users, and doors needing fresh prep take longer.

  • Standalone locks have no audit trail and no remote control; if you want to see who came in or unlock from your phone, you need a smart lock
  • Exterior keypads must be weather-rated; many residential keypad deadbolts are not built for direct rain or a gate with no overhang
  • Keypad locks need standard bore prep like any deadbolt; mortise and multipoint doors may not accept them without different hardware
  • Codes are only as private as the people who know them, and worn keypad buttons can reveal the digits over time; change codes when people change
  • Fob and RFID locks use the brand's own credentials, so a lost fob is deleted from the lock and replaced with the same brand
  • Mechanical pushbutton locks hold one code for everyone; changing it means telling everyone who uses the door
  • A dead-battery lock with no key override needs its emergency power contacts or an opening, so we recommend models with an override
  • On a rental the owner normally holds the master code

Pricing for keyless entry / electronic locks

The quote is based on the lock type and whether we supply it, door or gate prep, wiring for powered gate hardware, the number of users to enroll, and keying the override to your existing keys. It is written before installation starts.

The dispatcher gives you a range on the phone, and the technician confirms a written quote before any work starts.

Payment is by Cash, Credit Card, Debit Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and you receive an itemized receipt listing what was done.

Hardware

  • Schlage BE365 keypad deadbolt and FE595 keypad lever (standalone, no app)
  • Kwikset SmartCode 260 and 270 keypad deadbolts
  • Yale Assure keypad models in their non-connected versions
  • Kaba Simplex 1000 series and Lockey mechanical pushbutton locks (no batteries)
  • Lockey keypad gate locks and Simplex gate boxes for exterior gates
  • Lockly, Eufy and Ultraloq fingerprint and RFID deadbolts

Keypad, connected smart lock or plain deadbolt?

A keypad deadbolt gives you codes without an app or Wi-Fi. A connected smart lock adds remote locking, temporary codes and an entry log, and in exchange needs a battery schedule and a Wi-Fi or hub connection. Either should keep a mechanical key override and sit on a reinforced strike plate; the lock is only as strong as the door and frame. A plain Grade 1 deadbolt remains the simplest option when nobody needs codes.

FAQ

Keyless Entry / Electronic Locks: common questions

What is the difference between a keyless lock and a smart lock?
A keyless lock works on its own: codes, fobs or a fingerprint, no network. A smart lock adds Wi-Fi or a hub radio so you can operate it from your phone and see a log. If you do not need remote control, a keyless lock is simpler, cheaper and has fewer things to go wrong.
Does it work if the power or internet is out?
Yes. Battery keypad locks do not use your home's power or network at all, and mechanical pushbutton locks have no electronics. Nothing in the house going down affects them.
What happens when the batteries die?
Most models warn you for weeks first. If they die anyway, the key override opens the door, and many deadbolts also have contacts on the outside for a 9-volt battery to wake the keypad. Change the batteries once a year and you will rarely see either.
Can I give a cleaner a code that only works on certain days?
Some standalone models support scheduled codes, but most do not; that is a smart lock feature. If schedules matter, we point you to a model that has them.
Can you put a keypad on my back gate?
Yes, with a gate-rated lock such as a Lockey or Simplex gate box, which is built for weather and for the thin posts gates use. Standard keypad deadbolts are not made for that.
How many codes can a keypad lock hold?
It varies by model, from a handful on basic units to dozens on newer ones. We match the model to how many people need their own code.
Where do you provide service?
We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. Each city page lists the ZIP codes and nearby communities it covers; if your address is not on a city page, call and the dispatcher will tell you whether it is inside the service area.
Is there an extra charge for nights, weekends or holidays?
Ask the dispatcher whether an after-hours charge applies to your address; you'll know before anyone is sent. The line itself is answered around the clock, every day.
