What high-security locks involves

Here is how One & Only Locksmith approaches high-security locks.

High-security cylinders add hardened anti-drill inserts, pick-resistant sidebar or disc mechanisms, and a restricted keyway whose blanks are not sold to hardware stores. Keys are duplicated only for the registered owner. They are installed either as complete deadbolts or as cylinder swaps into compatible existing hardware, and they work best alongside a reinforced strike.

We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. The dispatch line at (888) 492-0666 is answered around the clock.

What's included

  • A walk-through of every exterior door, gate and side door to decide which ones need the upgrade
  • Installation of a UL 437-listed cylinder or a complete high-security deadbolt on each chosen door
  • Keying the doors alike or in a small keyed-different group, as you prefer
  • Registration of the keyway authorization so only the named owner can order additional keys
  • Hardened strike plates and long screws, because a strong cylinder on a weak jamb is wasted
  • Cutting the initial set of restricted keys on the authorized equipment
  • A written record of the system: cylinder codes and authorized signers, for future service

When you need high-security locks

  • You live in a high-burglary ZIP code
  • Your home is in a remote or hillside area
  • You've had a previous break-in attempt
  • You store valuables, firearms, or business inventory at home
  • You want a single restricted key system across the property

What to have ready

  • Proof of ownership; HOA approval if exterior hardware is controlled, and written landlord authorization for a rental
  • A count of doors, and whether you want to keep existing handlesets (cylinder swap) or replace the deadbolts outright
  • Who should be authorized to order keys in the future
  • How many keys you need to start with
  • Whether a gate, garage or ADU should be on the same key

Time on site and limits

Typically 30-60 minutes per door for a cylinder swap or deadbolt installation. Fresh door prep, strike reinforcement, systems that span many doors, and keyways we do not stock extend the job; some keys are cut in the shop or ordered from the manufacturer rather than on site.

  • Restricted keys are cut only for the registered owner or someone they authorize in writing. That is the feature, so there are no exceptions, including for family members not on the authorization
  • These cylinders cannot be rekeyed, copied or serviced by a hardware store; losing the authorization paperwork means re-registering with the manufacturer
  • Some keyways are sold only through the manufacturer's regional dealer; we confirm availability for your brand by phone before the visit
  • A high-security cylinder does not strengthen the door or frame, so we recommend strike and jamb reinforcement with it
  • Not all existing hardware accepts a high-security cylinder; some handlesets need full replacement rather than a swap
  • On a rental the owner, not the tenant, is normally the registered key holder unless both agree otherwise in writing
  • If every key to a restricted cylinder is lost, picking is designed to fail and the cylinder is usually drilled and replaced

Pricing for high-security locks

Pricing follows the number of cylinders, whether each is a cylinder swap or a full deadbolt, the brand and keyway grade, the number of keys cut, strike reinforcement, and the time of day. Restricted keys cost more per copy than standard keys, and we explain that ongoing cost before you commit.

The dispatcher gives you a range on the phone, and the technician confirms a written quote before any work starts.

Payment is by Cash, Credit Card, Debit Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and you receive an itemized receipt listing what was done.

Hardware

  • Medeco M3 and Medeco Maxum deadbolts
  • Mul-T-Lock MT5+ and Interactive+ cylinders and Hercular deadbolts
  • Abloy Protec2 disc-detainer cylinders
  • Schlage Primus and Everest 29 restricted cylinders
  • ASSA Twin and ASSA V-10 cylinders
  • Retrofit high-security cylinders that drop into Kwikset and Schlage housings

Is high-security hardware worth it?

High-security cylinders stop keys from being copied without authorization and resist drilling and picking. They are worth it when keys change hands often, when a lost key would be expensive to respond to, or when the door protects something a standard cylinder should not. They are not a substitute for a solid door, a reinforced strike and long screws into the framing.

FAQ

High-Security Locks: common questions

Are high-security locks worth it on a house?
They are worth it when the goal is to stop covert entry: picking, bumping and unauthorized key copies. They do not make a door kick-proof on their own, which is why we pair them with a reinforced strike. If your main worry is forced entry, start with reinforcement and a Grade 1 deadbolt.
Can my key be copied at a hardware store?
No. The blanks are controlled and the stores do not have them. Copies come only from an authorized dealer, and only for a person on the authorization record.
What happens if I lose the authorization card?
You re-register with the manufacturer, which takes paperwork and some time. Keep the card or certificate with your closing documents, not on the key ring.
Are these locks pick-proof?
Pick-resistant is the honest term. The sidebar and hardened components make picking impractical in the field, which is what the UL 437 rating tests. Nothing is impossible, but these cylinders are not opened by the methods used on standard locks.
Can my gate and front door share one high-security key?
Yes, if the gate hardware accepts a cylinder in the same format. Many gate boxes take a standard mortise or rim cylinder, which is available in most high-security lines.
Can a high-security lock be rekeyed later?
Yes, by an authorized dealer with the proper pins or discs and your authorization. It cannot be rekeyed by a general locksmith without that authorization, which is part of the control the system gives you.
Where do you provide service?
We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. Each city page lists the ZIP codes and nearby communities it covers; if your address is not on a city page, call and the dispatcher will tell you whether it is inside the service area.
Is there an extra charge for nights, weekends or holidays?
Ask the dispatcher whether an after-hours charge applies to your address; you'll know before anyone is sent. The line itself is answered around the clock, every day.
