What commercial lock installation involves
Here is how One & Only Locksmith approaches commercial lock installation.
Commercial doors see far more cycles than a front door at home, so the hardware has to be rated for it. We install ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and Grade 2 cylindrical levers, deadbolts and matching strikes on wood, hollow metal and aluminum doors, specifying the right lock function for each room and ADA-compliant lever trim where code calls for it. New installs are keyed into your existing system or set up on a fresh keyway, your choice.
We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. The dispatch line at (888) 492-0666 is answered around the clock.
What's included
- Site check of each door: material, thickness, existing prep, backset, handing and how much traffic it takes
- Lock function chosen per opening: entry/office, classroom, storeroom, privacy or passage, so the door behaves the way your staff expect
- Grade 1 or Grade 2 lever lockset installed with a matching ANSI strike and reinforced strike box where the frame allows
- Fresh door prep (161 cutout) on unprepped wood or hollow metal doors, or field fitting to an existing prep
- Cylinders keyed to your current master system, a new keyway, or a restricted keyway if you want key control
- Lever trim that meets accessibility requirements: operable without grasping, pinching or twisting
- A hardware schedule listing model, function, finish and keying for each door, for your facilities file
When you need commercial lock installation
- New tenant build-out
- Suite renovation or expansion
- Replacing residential-grade locks installed by previous owner
- Upgrading after a security incident
- Adding doors to new spaces
What to have ready
- Authorization from the business owner or property manager; in a leased space, check whether your lease requires landlord sign-off on hardware changes
- A door count with the function you want on each (which doors should always lock behind you, which should be free during business hours)
- Photos of the door edge, the existing lock and the frame strike so we can confirm the prep before we arrive
- Your existing key if we are keying into a current system, and a sample of any restricted key you already use
- Finish preference (satin chrome, satin stainless, oil-rubbed bronze, matte black) so hardware matches the rest of the space
Time on site and limits
Typically 45-90 minutes per door when the door already has a standard commercial prep and the new lock drops in. Cutting a fresh prep in a wood or hollow metal door, reworking a frame strike, or adding a deadbolt above a lever extends it, and multi-door jobs are scheduled as a block.
- Fire-rated doors: hardware must carry a listing matching the door, the latch must be self-latching, and field modification is tightly restricted. We will not cut a non-listed deadbolt or new prep into a rated door
- Doors on a required exit path cannot be fitted with hardware that needs a key, tool, or special knowledge to exit. If you want a locked exterior door that still exits freely, that usually means a storeroom-function lever or an exit device, not a double-cylinder deadbolt
- Lever height, clearance and opening force on accessible routes follow state and federal accessibility rules; we install to those, but we are not the authority who signs off a building for occupancy
- Aluminum storefront and all-glass doors use narrow-stile hardware, which is a different product family covered under our storefront lock service
- Keying into an existing master system requires the system records or a sample key; without them we can match the keyway but not the master bitting
Pricing for commercial lock installation
Hardware grade and brand, the lock function, whether the door needs a fresh prep or a strike rebuild, finish, and how many doors we are doing in one visit drive the price. Keying into a master system or onto a restricted keyway is quoted as its own line.
The dispatcher gives you a range on the phone, and the technician confirms a written quote before any work starts.
Payment is by Cash, Credit Card, Debit Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and you receive an itemized receipt listing what was done.

Rekeyable locks, keypads or access control?
Rekeyable mechanical locks cost the least per door and work well when turnover is low. Keypad or standalone electronic locks suit a few doors with changing users. Networked access control (cards, fobs, mobile credentials) makes sense when you need to revoke access instantly, log entries or manage many doors; it also needs power, wiring and a plan for free egress. Many buildings end up with a mix: access control on the main entries and rekeyable or restricted cylinders everywhere else.
