What does restaurant locksmith service involve, and who does it?

A restaurant runs on a handful of doors that take more abuse than any office: the front entry, the back door by the dumpsters, the walk-in cooler, the liquor and dry storage rooms, and the office with the drop safe. Typically 20-30 minutes per door for a rekey across the exterior and storage doors, 60-120 minutes to harden a back door with a new lever, latch guard, strike and closer adjustment, and 30-60 minutes for a walk-in latch and safety release. One & Only Locksmith dispatches mobile technicians for restaurant locksmith service across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area, 24/7. Call (888) 492-0666 for an ETA and a price range; the technician verifies ownership or authorization on arrival and provides a written quote before any work.

What restaurant locksmith service involves

Here is how One & Only Locksmith approaches restaurant locksmith service.

A restaurant runs on a handful of doors that take more abuse than any office: the front entry, the back door by the dumpsters, the walk-in cooler, the liquor and dry storage rooms, and the office with the drop safe. We service all of them with hardware that tolerates grease, heat, moisture and constant traffic, keep the exits compliant with the fire marshal, and rekey quickly when a manager or chef leaves with the keys. The back door and the walk-in get the most attention because they fail most.

We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. The dispatch line at (888) 492-0666 is answered around the clock.

What's included

  • Front door and storefront lock repair and replacement, including narrow-stile aluminum hardware
  • Back door hardening: Grade 1 storeroom-function lever or exit device with outside trim, latch guard, reinforced strike, and a closer that latches every time
  • Panic hardware and fire exit hardware on required exits, with alarmed devices where staff keep propping a door
  • Walk-in cooler and freezer latch and interior safety-release repair or replacement, with padlockable latches where theft is a problem
  • Liquor room, dry storage and office locks on a separate key from the general staff key, often with a keypad lock
  • Rekey of every exterior and storage door after manager, chef or key-holder turnover, with a key register for the operator
  • Combination changes and lock service on the office depository safe

When you need restaurant locksmith service

  • Last manager out left with the keys
  • Health inspector flagged a missing panic bar
  • Walk-in cooler interior release is broken (safety issue)
  • Back door is the most-attacked entry point
  • Reopening after a break-in attempt overnight

What to have ready

  • Authorization from the owner, general manager or franchisee; for a leased space, confirm who owns the exterior door hardware
  • A door list: front, back, cooler, freezer, storage, office, restrooms
  • Photos of the back door hardware from both sides and of the walk-in latch
  • Which key holders have left and which doors they had keys to
  • Any inspection notice from the fire marshal or health department, so we match the fix to the citation

Time on site and limits

Typically 20-30 minutes per door for a rekey across the exterior and storage doors, 60-120 minutes to harden a back door with a new lever, latch guard, strike and closer adjustment, and 30-60 minutes for a walk-in latch and safety release. Panic hardware, electric strikes and a full-building rekey onto a new master system are scheduled as half-day or full-day visits, and we work around service hours.

  • The back door is almost always a required exit, so it must open from inside with one push and no key. A deadbolt, slide bolt or chain on it has to come off; an alarmed exit device is the compliant way to discourage propping
  • Walk-in cooler and freezer doors must open from inside without a key even when padlocked outside. That interior release is a workplace safety requirement, and we will not install a latch that defeats it
  • Fire-rated doors between the kitchen and dining room or to a shared corridor need listed hardware and a working closer; hold-opens and wedges are not permitted on them
  • Grease, heat and steam near the line shorten the life of electronic locks; we steer keypads and readers to the office and storage doors where they survive
  • Franchise brand standards may dictate specific hardware; bring the spec and we match it
  • Restricted keys for storage and office doors are cut only for the authorized signer on file

Pricing for restaurant locksmith service

The number of doors, the work each needs (rekey, repair, new hardware, exit device, cooler latch), whether a master key system is being set up, hardware grade, and time of day set the price. Rekeys across many doors are quoted as a batch, and hardware that must be ordered for a specific cooler or door is quoted before we order it.

The dispatcher gives you a range on the phone, and the technician confirms a written quote before any work starts.

Payment is by Cash, Credit Card, Debit Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and you receive an itemized receipt listing what was done.

Hardware

  • Schlage ND and Sargent 10 Line storeroom-function levers
  • Von Duprin 99, Detex Advantex and Detex EAX-500 alarmed exit devices
  • Kason, Component Hardware (CHG) and Standard Keil walk-in latches with interior safety releases
  • Adams Rite storefront locks for aluminum front doors
  • Don-Jo latch guards and wrap-around plates, ANSI strikes with reinforced boxes
  • LCN and Norton closers rated for exterior doors
  • Schlage CO-100 and Alarm Lock Trilogy keypad levers for the office and liquor storage
  • Depository safes with S&G or SecuRam locks

Rekeyable locks, keypads or access control?

Rekeyable mechanical locks cost the least per door and work well when turnover is low. Keypad or standalone electronic locks suit a few doors with changing users. Networked access control (cards, fobs, mobile credentials) makes sense when you need to revoke access instantly, log entries or manage many doors; it also needs power, wiring and a plan for free egress. Many buildings end up with a mix: access control on the main entries and rekeyable or restricted cylinders everywhere else.

FAQ

Restaurant Locksmith Service: common questions

Do restaurant kitchens require interior cooler safety releases?
Yes. Walk-in coolers and freezers must open from inside without a key or tool, even when the outside is padlocked, so nobody can be trapped. A broken or missing inside release is a safety violation and a real hazard. We replace the latch and release assembly and confirm it opens with a light push from inside.
Our manager left with the keys. Which doors should we rekey?
Every door that key opened: typically the front, back, office, storage and liquor room. If the office held the safe, change the safe combination too. We rekey those doors in one visit, cut new keys for current key holders, and leave a key register so the next turnover is easier.
Can we lock the back door so staff cannot prop it open?
You cannot stop it from opening from inside; it is an exit. What you can do is fit an alarmed exit device that sounds when the bar is pushed without the key, and a closer that latches every time so a propped door is obvious. That combination ends most propping.
What back door lock holds up best against break-in attempts?
A Grade 1 storeroom-function lever or an exit device with outside trim, a latch guard covering the latch gap, a reinforced strike with long screws into the frame, and a closer that actually latches the door. The latch guard and strike do more than the lock brand; most back-door attacks pry the latch rather than attack the cylinder.
Can the liquor room be on a different key from the rest of the restaurant?
Yes, and it should be. We set storage and office doors on their own change keys under a manager master, or put a keypad lock on the liquor room so each manager has a code. Floor staff keys then open only the doors they need.
Can you work around our service hours?
Yes. Most restaurant work is scheduled before opening, between lunch and dinner, or after close so the dining room and kitchen are not disrupted. Lockouts and failed back doors are handled when they happen.
Where do you provide service?
We dispatch across greater Los Angeles, Ventura County, Silicon Valley and the Bay Area; see the city pages for local detail. Each city page lists the ZIP codes and nearby communities it covers; if your address is not on a city page, call and the dispatcher will tell you whether it is inside the service area.
Is there an extra charge for nights, weekends or holidays?
Ask the dispatcher whether an after-hours charge applies to your address; you'll know before anyone is sent. The line itself is answered around the clock, every day.
